Guess which one NYU hired, and which one NYU fired

Two NYU stories, related.

First story:
COLUMBIA, NYU OPEN CLASSROOMS TO FORMER AMERICAN TERRORIST

Kathy Boudin, a 1960s radical and former Weather Underground member who participated in a robbery that left two police officers and a security guard dead, now has the prestige of academia behind her.
The New York Post broke the story that Boudin, who spent 22 years in prison for driving the getaway car in the Brinks armed robbery, has been named the Sheinberg Scholar-in-Residence at NYU Law School, along with enjoying an adjunct professorship at Columbia University’s School of Social Work...“Of all the people in the world to find to speak on the issue of what women face coming out of parole and reentry, Columbia and NYU had to find a former far-left extremist who has been convicted for the death of three people,” said the Wall Street Journal’s Sohrab Ahmari on Opinion Journal Live.
Boudin’s students may not realize that the Weather Underground was an infamous radical leftist student organization that split with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in the late 1960s to join ranks with black liberationists and other self-identifying revolutionaries. Their goal was nothing short of overthrowing the United States government.
Boudin survived the 1970 Greenwich Village townhouse explosion, when a bomb intended for the Fort Dix, New Jersey Army base prematurely detonated and killed Weather Underground activists Theodore Gold, Diana Oughton and Terry Robbins. At the time of the explosion, Boudin was out on bail, awaiting trial for her role in the “Days of Rage” demonstrations in Chicago the year before.
Still living in hiding as a fugitive in 1981, Boudin played a central role in the Brinks heist, which was supposed to usher in a new American revolution but instead ended with three dead. At the time of the robbery, Boudin was 38, married, and the mother of a toddler.

Second story:

NYU tells Chinese dissident that he has two weeks to move out

NYU brass grudgingly gave blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng an extra two weeks to move off campus — but warned he’ll have to find a hotel if he misses the deadline, The Post has learned.
The school this week told Chen — who came to New York last year after making a dramatic escape to the US Embassy in China — that he and his family must vacate NYU housing by July 15 “at the latest,” according to a source briefed on the situation.
NYU has prodded the human-rights hero to move quickly, according to insiders, telling Chen that another faculty member is slated to move into the Greenwich Village pad where Chen has stayed with his family for more than a year, according to a source.

“They told him, ‘The sooner, the better.’ ”
The move-out mandate comes as Chen plans a trip to Taiwan later this month, and grapples with worries that members of his family in China are being beaten and denied urgent medical care by authorities.
NYU’s extension of its out-by-June-30 eviction notice comes on heels of an exclusive Post report that the university, which is building a new Shanghai campus, was ousting Chen under pressure from China.
Concerned about his finances and where he will go next, Chen has balked as the deadline nears, sources said.
In response, frustrated NYU officials told him his indecision could land his family in a hotel within a month.
“They lectured him about not making up his mind, and told him living in a hotel isn’t going to be fun,” said a source close to the situation.
NYU says Chen from the outset was aware that he would be accommodated for only a year, with his NYU sponsor, Jerry Cohen, saying, “No political refugee, even Albert Einstein, has received better treatment by an American academic institution than that received by Chen from NYU.”
The school “has scouted more than two dozen apartments [and] recently shown him three very nice ones, none of which he has embraced,” said NYU spokesman John Beckman.
Chen has declined comment on his ouster. But he didn’t sound as if his days were so scarcely numbered in an interview last month, when he told Business Insider, “I’ll probably leave NYU by the end of this year.”
Chen was candid with his speculation about the reasons for his ouster. “NYU is actually receiving a lot of pressure from the CPC [Communist Party of China], and I think that they do fear this kind of pressure,” he said.
Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) said this week he may call for a Capitol Hill hearing on the matter.

You no doubt know about Boudin. She's no stranger to this blog. Aside from her years of commie-terrorist-serial-bomber-stuff, she murdered three policemen by setting them up for an ambush-- she asked them to lower their guns when they apprehended her, so her Weathermen/Black Panther buddies could shoot them dead in an ambush out of the back of her van.

Perhaps you don't know a lot about Chen.

From John Thompson:

[Chinese] guards routinely stole into Chen Guangcheng's house, wrapped him in a blanket, beat him bloody, broke his wife's bones. The blanket seemed especially gratuitous: Chen is blind. This went on for a year and a half, all because the self-taught lawyer had sued the Chinese government to stop forced abortions in his village. So one dark April night, he left it all behind. He scrambled over the wall of his courtyard, shattering his foot in the fall. Still, he eluded over sixty thugs patrolling his town by hiding in the rank filth of a pigsty. He alerted a team of sympathizers collaborators with coded messages from a smuggled cell phone; they picked him up and began the long drive to Beijing, where Chen shuttled among apartments, never spending two nights in the same place.
Chen, a blind lawyer from China, fought for decades against China's brutal One Child Policy, systematic forced abortions, and the ubiquitous abandonment and murder of baby girls. After years of imprisonment and torture, he was able to escape the the United States.

After a year at NYU, he is being unceremoniously booted out on the street. It seems that the Communist Party of China is displeased with Chen's persistent existence, and has threatened to gum up plans for NYU expansion in China.

Meanwhile, Professor Kathy Boudin will begin teaching classes at NYU, as well as at Columbia.

It's like an answered rhetorical question. When I read about Boudin's appointment at NYU (my oldest daughter's alma mater), I asked myself "can it get any worse?"

It can.

Here's the email for NYU president John Sexton (john.sexton@nyu.edu). I always liked the guy.

  1. This is almost as bad as the Romeike's. Our government can make room for every illegal alien welfare mother with seven kids who hasn't worked in twenty years, but not a nice evangelical family from Germany that just wants to homeschool its kids.

  2. It’s just like Jesus said in Matthew 6:9-15: If you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins, except for ex-cons who have done their time, they shall be shunned forever with no chance for redemption. (I added the part about the ex-cons to bring the Bible up to date with modern Christian thinking. If that’s not appropriate, I guess I’ll see you in Hell.)

    1. You make a poor biblical scholar, KW. And you're also disingenuous.

First, the sins forgiven here are personal transgressions against you. So if someone does you wrong, it's your duty to forgive him, make nice, etc. Boudin didn't shoot my family member.

That doesn't mean that there aren't consequences. For example, if you molest kids, you aren't allowed back in a school again, even if you've served your time.

The reason I think you're disingenuous is because everyone know that you would be up in arms if they hired Richard Jewell or Timothy McVeigh to teach, or even a Randy Weaver.

There is no hypocrisy here, except on your part.

Also, where did you come up with the condition that after ex-cons have done their time, only then can they be forgiven?

And on another note, I'm sick of biblically ignorant anti-Christian bigots quoting the Bible in a deceptive manner.

    4. Ward Churchill claimed to be some kind of gunrunner for the American Indian Movement in the 70's. It's possible that he's just trying to bolster his radical chic and that that's a lie too, just like everything else he says, but that's what he claims. He was a department chair in the ethnic studies department. His level of education? A bachelor's degree.

So yes, I think universities tend to grant professorships based on radical chic, not credentials. Either that, or they mistakenly believe that radical chic is a credential.

I better watch what I say, or else KW is going to accuse me of hating education. That's what he says whenever anyone is rightly critical of academia. He confuses wanting education to be better with hating education. Weird.

  3. Hey yo, KW: This is a story about hypocrisy. There was room for convicted terrorist Boudin, but not the blind dissident who stands up to the oppressive Chinese government.

But more to your point. I know that in your world, political terrorists are mostly right-wing in orientation. So the ratio of right-wing to left-wing terrorists must be about 100: 1.

So why is that so many left-wing terrorists are employed at universities? It's almost as if universities are celebrating their deeds. If a university really wanted to be kind of forgiving, wouldn't they hire a few right-wing terrorists as well?

That would never happen. What you're seeing here with Boudin would be like a Catholic university hiring an abortion clinic bomber right out of prison. People like you would understand such a move as condoning the action, not as Christian forgiveness.

Hiring this Boudin had nothing to do with forgiveness and everything to do with celebrating murder.

  4. The New York Post gives only one side of the story. Here is a Reuters story, which paints the situation in a different light.

A Chinese dissident who fled his home country to become a visiting scholar at New York University accused the school on Sunday of asking him to leave because of "unrelenting pressure" from China.

NYU denied the claim, saying that it had said last year before blind dissident Chen Guangcheng arrived that his fellowship would last up to a year and end sometime this summer.

    ...

NYU pointed to a PBS television interview in May 2012 with Cohen, who had said Chen would be at NYU for a year at most while he adjusted to a new country.

Chen could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

John Beckman, an NYU spokesman, described Chen's claims as "both false and contradicted by the well-established facts."

"Mr. Chen's fellowship at NYU and its conclusion have had nothing to do with the Chinese government. All fellowships come to an end," Beckman said in a statement.

NYU said Chen had received offers from two other academic institutions. Fordham University Law School in New York said on Friday it was in talks with Chen.

The second offer is from the Witherspoon Institute, based in Princeton, New Jersey, Bob Fu, the president of Texas-based Christian advocacy group ChinaAid, told Reuters. Chen had not yet made a decision, said Fu, whose group has campaigned for Chen.

The NYU position was temporary from the start and it's not like the guy has nowhere to go. NYU has done a good deed and is now being unfairly maligned.

Fellowships are, to my knowledge, always temporary. They are also frequently extended.

      However, Chen himself says that

he [is] being forced to leave New York University over concerns that his activism was harming the university’s relationship with China.
      --- (New York Times)

Of course, some bootlicking lackey-boyz might prefer to believe that Chen is a liar and it's all a regrettable situation the figurehead President of New York University really has no control over. So very sad, don't you think? After all, the election is over. Why, just one year ago, Chen was useful...

[Chen's] exit [from China] resolves a dispute that has complicated U.S.-China relations since he turned up at the American embassy in Beijing on April 26 after escaping detention in Shandong province. For President Barack Obama, running for re-election, it puts to rest an issue over which he has been berated by Republicans for not being tough enough on China.
      --- Newsmax (5/2012)

The Lackwit Administration doesn't need political cover anymore, so Chen is disposable.

    7. Again, that's Chen's side of the story. Further in the NYT article we read the other side:

The university issued a statement of its own on Sunday, denying Mr. Chen’s claims. “We are very discouraged to learn of Mr. Chen’s statement, which contains a number of speculations about the role of the Chinese government in N.Y.U.’s decision-making that are both false and contradicted by the well-established facts,” John Beckman, a university spokesman, said in the statement. He said the university was “puzzled and saddened” by Mr. Chen’s accusations but that it would continue to help him and his family.

The university insists that Mr. Chen’s law school fellowship was always meant to be for one year, and those who have worked closely with him in recent months said he understood the time limitations of a financial arrangement that even Mr. Chen acknowledged was extremely generous. The fellowship’s end, Mr. Beckman said, “had nothing to do with the Chinese government — all fellowships come to an end.”

NYU scholars are free to decide whether they want to renew Chen's one-year fellowship. They have no more obligation to keep him there than, say, Witherspoon Institute has an obligation to offer him a new position.

The outrage is completely fabricated. NYU is not a villain.

    9. Boudin's is not a fellowship. She is invited to NYU for a day to give a lecture and have discussions. From the program page:

The Rose Sheinberg Lecture Program invites a scholar working on cutting-edge issues of gender, race, and class to participate in a day of informal discussion, classroom teaching and formal lecture in order to expose the Law School community to a variety of ideas, insights, and initiatives.

      Duh.

"[A]ll fellowships come to an end.”

      Duh.

      "NYU is not a villain."

Duh. NYU is an institution desperate for money. Its Administrators are a gang of conniving, power-hungry, Ivy-envying money grubbers.

NYU is famous for creating more student indebtedness than any other university:

[t]he 2010 graduating class departed campus owing $659 million, according to Department of Education data, the highest sum of any class in the country (excluding a handful of for-profit colleges)... Under [President] Sexton's leadership, the school has embarked on a series of misguided propositions, opponents assert, including opening satellite campuses overseas in Shanghai and Abu Dhabi."
      --- Puffington Host

And the President has so little power, he cannot extend a fellowship. But he can

[award Jacob Lew] a $685,000 bonus as he was leaving to take a position at Citigroup, an unusual payment for someone who was leaving voluntarily...
      --- NYT

And that was in addition to underwriting Lew's $1.5 million mortgage, $440,000 of which was "forgiven".

Yes, Boudin is a "Scholar in Residence" like her predecessor in 1994, Bernardine Dohrn. I guess Bernie was available earlier because she got less jail time.

Boudin is also a Bachelor's-level (law school dropout) adjunct faculty member at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. She is experienced, having taught on a Soviet collective farm in '65. I presume she teaches something like Activism 455: Do's and Don'ts With Nail Bomb Triggers, having survived a 1970 Palestinian-style work accident building a bomb that was intended for a military dance. The explosion collapsed the Greenwich Village apartment building and killed three valiant comrades. Her Socialist courage could not be suppressed, though. She then ran and hid, allegedly in Cuba.

Class lady, that. Some women do their nails, some build nail bombs. You can tell which is which by the lipstick on the snout and the stink of left-wing hypocrisy.

In this Progressive age, the opposite of "diversity" is "university".

The Progressive Left will permit no dissent within the grounds of the university.

Persons who disagree with or challenge their dogmas and myths cannot even be invited to speak to interested groups without risk of institutional property damage and disruption of the event.

Students and faculty who speak out are demonized, ridiculed, often subjected to kangaroo "courts", and exiled or forced into political re-education classes. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has documented many, many abridgements of civil rights on campus. By the way, FIRE is an organization that vigorously defends civil rights on campus and is worthy of your donations.

Universities have lost their way. I am partially to blame. I was part of the "let the inmates run the asylum" crowd of left-wing loons in the early seventies, and the current situation is nothing more than the full flowering of that "movement". Boudin will feel right at home there. She will be coddled and celebrated; any left-winger who has been in prison for murder has the Truman Capote Seal of Approval. I have no doubt that the taxpayers she so despises and scorns will be sending grant money (that would be better spent on braces or private schools) her way.

I doubt that Chen Guangcheng has many good words for the kind of left-wing terrorist governments that Boudin and the NYTimes' Thomas Friedman (who fantasizes about "what if we could just be China for a day?") celebrate and lionize.

No, NYU's choice has nothing to do with "forgiveness". Their choice has everything to do with promoting an unsullied, extreme left-wing agenda in the law school and burnishing their "edgy" creds among the academic nomenklatura.

But now I turn to a different topic: despite a few false starts and beginner's errors, I encourage you, Popeye, to keep reading the from the Bible. It's not important that you "get it" right out of the gate. Eventually, it will get you.
