I still stand at odds with the conservative party line - guns seem to do more harm than good and I'm very happy not owning one. <br /><br />No one, not even the most naive of liberals, would make the claim that government is not and cannot be a force of evil. One thing that shook me out of my former libertarian stupor was a deeper consideration of the government as an extension of human community, which is in turn an extension of the family - the fundamental unit of society. <br /><br />This month's First Things has a nice article on the good of government. This attitude seems in line with classic conservatism and the platform of Lincoln and Roosevelt type Republicans.
