"Along comes Hamas"

Andrew McCarthy gets it right.

"It has been only eleven days, but we’re already seeing the wages of November 6. The world has become a much more dangerous place, and not just for Israelis."

    Right you are.

May I add that Christ was Jewish?

Actually, the most prolific killers of Jews in history have been socialists.

  4. Michael,

Actually, you're right that 'socialists' were the most prolific killers of Jews, provided you use the correct definition of 'socialist' to mean the opposite of 'individualist', in which case virtually all killing of Jews was done by non-individualists, including European pogroms in the lead up to the Crusades by Christian mobs.

Socialism entails the merging of the individual in a larger entity, often a state, but also a community. As your favorite historian Rodney Stark noted in 'the Triumph of Christianity', the early Christian churches were socialist because their members looked out for each other, pooling their resources, helping each other through difficult times.

Using 'socialist' to describe people you don't like, Marxists, liberals, liberals, progressives, or whatever - is just sloppy thinking.

    George,

I looked at the list of Israeli Nobel Prize winners. 10. Not bad compared to Italy's 20 (with a much larger population - and which has existed for a longer time as a unified country). Though, 2 were for Economics (which isn't a real Nobel Prize) and 3 were for Peace, which isn't much of a achievement; Obama got his Nobel Prize in Peace for not being George W Bush...

I would have thought that your experiences and your family's experiences as Jews would have made you a little more reluctant to express as much hatred about Christians as you obviously do, and it should have made you more sensitive to the Muslim attacks on Jews.

    Odd.

  6. Do you really want to be rid of "religion"?

Many nations have tried it-- the Soviets, Chinese Communists, Khmer Rouge etc.

When religion goes away, it is replaced by something quite substantial. State atheism has a track record much uglier than the ugliest theocracy.

I doubt these examples make Troy bat an eye. If people in power have to rid the world of religion by violence, so be it.

  7. Troy, your original comment is what we like to call a "cheap shot."

We know that Christians have sometimes persecuted Jews, just like many, many other groups have persecuted Jews, to include godless communists. Jews have always been a convenient target, mostly because--and this is a little politically incorrect--they are very, very successful, and therefore rise to the top of whatever field they happen to pursue. They are also wealthy, which naturally goes hand in hand with being at the top of their fields. When a populist demagogue wants to inflame passions about "the rich" or bankers, it isn't such a huge leap to get to Jews.

So Jews have been persecuted. So what's your point? That Christians are being hypocritical now? I think you're just trying to use shame to shut people up.

Religion is not going away. People have tried to make it go away on several occasions and it never ends well. The impulse to make it go away usually results in gulags and guillotines.

  8. Homosexuals have traditionally been sympathetic toward the man-boy love (child rape) movement. I wonder why they're not now? Is it just guilt?
