"Along comes Hamas"

Andrew McCarthy gets it right.

"It has been only eleven days, but we’re already seeing the wages of November 6. The world has become a much more dangerous place, and not just for Israelis."

  2. Funny how some Christians today are so protective of Israel, while historically Christians have always been the most fanatical mass-murderers of Jews. Is it guilt or do they just need the Jews to play their role in the Apocalypse?

    1. Well, the Mesopotamians were pretty good at murdering Jews, and the Romans were pretty good at murdering Jews, only then did the Christians and the Muslims get good at murdering Jews, after which the Nazis pretty much perfected the industrial murder of Jews, along with the the Soviets who were also good at murdering Jews, and the modern Muslim is so focused on murdering Jews they will kill their own children to do so.

Israel happens to be a beacon of freedom and reason in the Middle East, contrasted by a billion or so barbarians, many of whom believe that normal gravity is suspended in Mecca. Israel punches far, far above its demographic weight in Nobel prizes, peer-reviewed scientific papers, patents, and medical innovation.

So what's "funny" about supporting them, as opposed to supporting a gang of clitorectomizing, woman-killing, antiscience, homosexual-murdering barbarians?

      I'm just askin'.

      Right you are.

May I add that Christ was Jewish?

Actually, the most prolific killers of Jews in history have been socialists.

Exactly! But I still like being a Christian.

    5. Michael,

Actually, you're right that 'socialists' were the most prolific killers of Jews, provided you use the correct definition of 'socialist' to mean the opposite of 'individualist', in which case virtually all killing of Jews was done by non-individualists, including European pogroms in the lead up to the Crusades by Christian mobs.

Socialism entails the merging of the individual in a larger entity, often a state, but also a community. As your favorite historian Rodney Stark noted in 'the Triumph of Christianity', the early Christian churches were socialist because their members looked out for each other, pooling their resources, helping each other through difficult times.

Using 'socialist' to describe people you don't like, Marxists, liberals, liberals, progressives, or whatever - is just sloppy thinking.

      George,

I looked at the list of Israeli Nobel Prize winners. 10. Not bad compared to Italy's 20 (with a much larger population - and which has existed for a longer time as a unified country). Though, 2 were for Economics (which isn't a real Nobel Prize) and 3 were for Peace, which isn't much of a achievement; Obama got his Nobel Prize in Peace for not being George W Bush...

Really? Socialists have been around for a century. What about all the pogroms before that? How come many Jews are socialists right now?

You don't know what you are talking about. I am from a Jewish family that got wiped out pretty much during WWII. My wife's family escaped the pogroms in Ukraine before WWII. They fled from Kiev to Lvov and pretended to be Christians to save their lives. We visit family in Ukraine every year and the level of Christian antisemitism over there that still exists today is amazing. Everybody hates the Jews. Same story in Poland.

    7. Nazis were socialists. Soviets (Ukraine before WWII) were socialists. No one has killed Jews on the scale that socialists have.

There has been plenty of anti-semitism in the past 3000 years. None of it anywhere near approaches the lethality of socialism to Jews.

Muslims seem to be trying as hard as they can, though.

    8. @troy:

I would have thought that your experiences and your family's experiences as Jews would have made you a little more reluctant to express as much hatred about Christians as you obviously do, and it should have made you more sensitive to the Muslim attacks on Jews.

      Odd.

    9. Oh, I am sensitive enough about Muslim attacks on Jews. I have some relatives in Israel to worry about a little bit. Islam, even more than Christianity, is a sick ideology. The sooner the world gets rid of religion the better. I'm pretty sure it will happen eventually.

    10. Troy, your original comment is what we like to call a "cheap shot."

We know that Christians have sometimes persecuted Jews, just like many, many other groups have persecuted Jews, to include godless communists. Jews have always been a convenient target, mostly because--and this is a little politically incorrect--they are very, very successful, and therefore rise to the top of whatever field they happen to pursue. They are also wealthy, which naturally goes hand in hand with being at the top of their fields. When a populist demagogue wants to inflame passions about "the rich" or bankers, it isn't such a huge leap to get to Jews.

So Jews have been persecuted. So what's your point? That Christians are being hypocritical now? I think you're just trying to use shame to shut people up.

Religion is not going away. People have tried to make it go away on several occasions and it never ends well. The impulse to make it go away usually results in gulags and guillotines.

  3. Do you really want to be rid of "religion"?

Many nations have tried it-- the Soviets, Chinese Communists, Khmer Rouge etc.

When religion goes away, it is replaced by something quite substantial. State atheism has a track record much uglier than the ugliest theocracy.

I doubt these examples make Troy bat an eye. If people in power have to rid the world of religion by violence, so be it.
