Washington State to gun owners: 'No Fourth Amendment for you'

The original version of Washington State's recent new gun control bill-- Senate Bill 5737-- violated the Constitution... twice. The first violation, obviously, was the gun control. The second was this:

... with respect to the thousands of weapons like that already owned by Washington residents, the bill says this:
“In order to continue to possess an assault weapon that was legally possessed on the effective date of this section, the person possessing shall ... safely and securely store the assault weapon. The sheriff of the county may, no more than once per year, conduct an inspection to ensure compliance with this subsection.”
In other words, come into homes without a warrant to poke around. Failure to comply could get you up to a year in jail.

The Democrat sponsors of the bill jerked the 'police can enter your home without warrant to inspect your guns or you go to jail' provision of the bill, once the issue hit the press.

Of course they insist this was all just a silly mistake. But it wasn't a mistake. They just got caught, and the blowback was more than they expected.

The take home lesson is this: gun controllers don't really give a shit about your Constitutional rights.

  2. What exactly is the problem? If you own an assault weapon, it should be safely and securely stored. You don't need an assault weapon for protection in case of a home invasion. A hand gun is entirely adequate for that. It's not a license for the police to 'poke around' a gun owner's house. All that's required is to show that the assault weapon is safely stored. Requiring access to one part of one room.

It's similar to the regulation in Australia that swimming pool owners have to have an adequate child proof fence surrounding it to prevent unsupervised children falling into and drowning in private pools. Regular official inspections of private property is involved here too.

And swimming pools are far less dangerous than assault weapons. Actually, owners of assault weapons should be grateful for their gun storage being inspected. If their guns are insecurely stored, and subsequently stolen and used in a crime, they should be prosecuted as if they had been an accessory to the crime. Even murder.

  3. What is an 'assault weapon' Bach? I read that in the U.K. there is a move afoot to ban pointy kitchen knives. I guess those are 'assault knives'? And how about the box cutters used by the 9/11 hijackers? Were they ordinary box cutters or the 'assault' version? And when some evil homicidal maniac fills a five gallon glass water bottle with gasoline (petrol) and tosses it into some crowded room are we going to call it an 'assault' bottle?

  4. And we actually have more people drown every year than are killed with semi-auto rifles.
