I think any overtly partisan political group trying to influence elections deservers a maximal amount of scrutiny, especially since the rules for 501(c) (3) specifically state “it may not attempt to influence legislation as a substantial part of its activities and it may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.”
Doubly so when the applications are in crayon delivered by a babbling idiot in a tricorn hat.
KW, this isn't just about scrutiny applied to nonprofits. It's about using the IRS as a weapon, as this administration has done against pro-life and pro-traditional marriage groups. It's about double standards.
Words that got an organization flagged included "patriot", "educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights", and even "making America a better place to live."
Those must be scary groups. They want to make America a better place to live and they care about the Bill of Rights. Probably terrorists or something.
Also, I think you've made a mistake here. The article I'm reading in the Christian Science Monitor concerns 501(c)(4) organizations, not 501(c)(3).
Obviously, Progressives in general have little to worry about. There's nothing to audit about an EBT card.
But fear not: our chief "executive" fired a guy whose acting capacity was ending...
President Barack Obama has thrown his acting IRS commissioner overboard, making Steven Miller the highest-ranking political casualty thus far in a series of scandals that have swept his administration in recent weeks...
But in an email to IRS employees, Miller claimed he would only be leaving next month because his assignment would be over. --- Daily Mail (UK) 5/16/13
Now that's a Profile in Courage. :)
Of course, Axelrod said on MSNBC that the government is "so vast" that President Lackwit couldn't possibly manage it all. I wish he had told us that in 2008. But what Axelrod failed to add is that President Lackwit would have the same problem managing a neighborhood Dairy Queen.
Admiral, there are plenty of rich leftists out there whose assets include much more than EBT cards.
Conservative values are middle class values. The upper class and underclass represents two factions of the Democratic Party with different interests, though they stick together for political gain.
Upper class leftists look at conservatives as uneducated because, from the point of view of people who went to all the best schools, we are. They will never call their fellow Democrats living in the 'hood uneducated, even if they're high school dropouts who can't tell you what the Soviet Union was.
Underclass leftists look at conservatives as "the rich" because, from their point of view, we are. We may have only a modest suburban home and two cars in the driveway, but from where they're sitting we're rich because we don't live in government subsidized housing.
Conservatives are alternately uneducated and filthy rich. Leftists apparently go to all the best schools despite coming from ever so humble means. Their perception of us tells us more about them than it does about us.
Well, all taxes are extorted at the end of a gun. I'm not opposed to all taxes. The IRS kind of sucks--this scandal being a case in point--but I'm not an anarchist and we need to fund our government somehow. A smaller government would be preferable, which would require less funding.
The combined scandals of this administration are far, far worse than Watergate. I don't say that lightly. Watergate was a terrible abuse of power. This is far worse.
I think some people are reluctant to give President Lackwit all the credit he deserves.
Think about his soaring speeches where he said things like "This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal." CO2 just hit 400 ppm, verifying the healing. I love warm weather!
And you can't forget the inspiring line at OSU about the "voices" warning that "tyranny [is] always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices." That was just before the IRS scandal broke. Apparently, the IRS was tyrannizing those "voices". But the President knew nothing! NOTHING! And he still knows nothing, dammit! So SHUT UP! Can we talk about high-speed rail now?
And I hear that the construction industry has picked up a new meme: they're calling speed bumps in the road "dead ambassadors". I know that's rude, but as Hillary Clintoon said, "[A]t this point, what difference does it make?"
I just received an e-mail from CatholicVote.org. Here it is in part:
In July 2009, the Chicago IRS office threatened the CatholicVote.org Education Fund.
The CV Education Fund is our 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity, created to educate, inspire and mobilize Catholic voters. As you may know, 501(c)3 charities, unlike our sister org (CatholicVote.org, a 501c4 organization) are not permitted to intervene in any political campaign or to oppose or support any political candidate.
We never did.
But according to the IRS, an unnamed source provided them information [yoo-hoo, sound familiar?], including an email that we distributed prior to the 2008 election, which prompted their ‘examination.’
The email in question was titled “Barack Obama on the Issues of Importance to Catholics” and it specifically disclaimed any endorsement or approval of any political candidate.
In fact, our email did not even offer our position! Instead, we used actual Obama press releases and news stories to provide voters information on his positions on the issues of “abortion, stem cell research, contraceptives, and gay marriage.”
We urged voters to gather the facts, and ended our email with this line: “Let’s have an informed electorate on Tuesday.”
Hoo's "friends" and fellow informers have been busy. Watch out for those little piggies. They always have their little snouts up somebody's asshole snuffling up dirt. And trust me, a good lawyer and the Patriot Act can pop the top right off anonymity when they screw up and go on record. The Internet never forgets. Save it if you think you might need it.
Let's not forget "attack watch", the Obama Administration's attempt to gather information on people who are spreading vicious "lies" (truths) about them. We used to call those dissenting voices and, as I remember from the Bush years, they used to be the most patriotic of all. Now they're just racist.

Oh, you think "all" such organizations deserve such scrutiny? Because "all" of them weren't. Only the conservative ones.
DeleteDo you think that "all" of them deserved to have their confidential tax information should turned over to ProPublica?

Note that the Obama-serving IRS naturally selected groups named "Patriots" and "Constitution" as their enemies.

The real IRS scandal is that they extort money at the point of a gun, not that they question some conservative group's tax exemption.

As DJ's used to say, "and the hits just keep on comin': IRS ordered conservative educational group to turn over a list of high school and college students it trained.
