A perspective on gun control

Pia De Solenni from National Catholic Register has a nice little factoid:

Despite media coverage, guns are overwhelmingly used for purposes other than unjust violence. Although we have no exact data on the number of firearms in the U.S., a conservative estimate puts it at about 250 million, not including those owned by law enforcement and government. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 11,078 homicides resulting from firearms in 2010. The total number of deaths from firearms, including use by law enforcement, suicide and accidents, was 31,672. That means that less than .000127% of privately owned guns resulted in any type of death.

Please read the whole thing-- it's a fine discussion of gun control from the perspective of a Catholic theologian.

Let's compare the death rate from private gun ownership to the death rate from... ohh... the death rate from private car ownership... by... Senate Democrats.

Let's go back to 1950, to get a big enough N.

Assuming that the number of guns is fixed (stay with me) and the annual gun homicides is fixed, we have (63 x .000127% equals) .008% chance of any specific privately owned gun killing someone since 1950.

Assume that there have been roughly 300 Democrat Senators since 1950 (it's hard to count exactly without KKK membership rolls), and each Democrat Senator owned an average of 10 cars over that period. The number of Democrat Senator cars used in homicides since 1950 is 1. The chance that any specific privately owned Democrat Senator's car was used in a homicide since 1950 is .03%.

Since 1950, the likelihood of a Democrat Senator's car being used to kill someone was four times the likelihood of a private citizen's gun being used to kill someone.

  1. How many people are killed by incompetent medical doctors each year? About 200,000 it turns out. For 1 million US doctors, that's 20%.

How many people have you killed, Egnor?

  2. Clearly, the solution is to put more guns to the streets. That would increase the denominator and, with luck, not the numerator.

  3. According to the analysis by the Violence Policy Center, in 2010 there were only 230 justifiable homicides involving a gun, and for each one of those, there were 36 criminal homicides involving guns. In other words, for every bad guy stopped by a gun, 36 innocent people are murdered with a gun.

The vast majority of these murders happen with hand guns, and the most horrific mass killings happen with military derived high capacity semi-automatic rifles. These are what need to be regulated. Adding in Grandpa’s hunting shotguns and a collectors civil war pistols to manipulate the statistics is disingenuous, because other than trying to keep them from felons and the mentally unstable, nobody is trying to regulate them.

Egnor, you should start a new group “Christians for killing machines”.

    1. And the vast majority of handgun murders are committed by Democrats in municipalities governed by Democrats.

The Violence Policy Center. What a laugh. Hoo gives a fuck what they think. And that's all you need to know.

    3. Your attitude seems to be Democrats killing Democrats is just fine by you, so much so in fact that you are fighting to make sure they keep killing each other. Gunshot wound to the head = money making opportunity for Egnor.

What we need in this country is more anonymous informants. Informers can "out" gun owners so their children can be punished for their parents' thought crimes, their homes can be targeted, and their employment compromised. Progressives love to punish people for thought crimes.

Yes, yes, I know... Normal people think of informants as the sludge at the bottom of the social septic tank. But remember... even those disgusting bottom-dwellers contribute in their own way.

    1. My, my, crazy admiral, what a vivid fantasy world you live in. Glen Beck has rotted your brain.

KW-san, tell us again about how your flashing fists and nerves of steel instantly disarmed a knife-wielding assailant with designs on your life. Or the story about how a love-crazed woman viciously attacked you with a razor-sharp blade because she was crazed with jealousy and lust for your perfect body.

Help me get a grip on reality, man. Lay some words of whizz-dom on me from the ninja love god.

    3. Those aren’t two separate stories, and I was cut and bleeding. Unfortunately the young woman wouldn’t let me get dressed because she kept going for the knife. When I finally got my pants on and walked out of the apartment, shoeless and shitless, with a bloody hand holding a bloody knife, other sailors who heard the commotion immediately tacked me. It was only after they went in and saw that she was fine that they let me go. In the meantime she had managed to hide my shoes and shirt. Luckily one of the other sailors had a souvenir tee shirt and an extra pair of sneakers so I could get back on base.

Feel free to lay in bed at night and fantasize that you are me, because if you are still clinging to one of my old Navy stories, your real life (as opposed to your fantasy life where you’re an admiral in Glen Beck’s Navy) must be boring as shit.

"Clinging" is the wrong word. Laughing is more apt, ninja. I never forget a good joke.
