Jan van Eyck: Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and wife 1434

I am fascinated by medieval and early Renaissance painting. I like the depiction of everyday life, like this most famous van Eyck.

  1. Note the dog, symbolic of fidelity in much of these period pieces. The woman is obviously with child and holds her hand tenderly on her 'bump' - an imagery any father/husband would FEEL. The man seems to be in contemplation, or perhaps giving a prayer of thanks. Exemplary work!
Also the reflections in the mirror.
    Exquisite taste, as usual Mike.
