Commentor KW on physician-assisted suicide

A comment by KW on my opposition to physician-assisted suicide warrants a post in reply.

KW:

You want to force people to suffer the indignity of a painful withering death, and then pat yourself on the back for cherishing life. You can’t stand the thought of people living, dying, and behaving other than the way you think they should, and will do whatever you can to control them. You think the pinnacle of morality is contained in a two thousand year old fairytale. You are sick. Your religion warps your mind.

Understand, KW, that on a daily basis I relieve the suffering of people facing death. The idea of you lecturing me on relief of suffering is obscene.

Killing in not medical care. If you are terminally ill and suffering, you can kill yourself and no one can stop you. There are bridges and ropes and guns and closed garages and running cars everywhere.

Suicides have never anywhere been hampered by lack of opportunity.

What I won't let you do is turn my profession into killers.

  1. And when that day comes, what are you going to do, quit?

  2. I'll organize and defy, and keep praying.

Just like doctors of conscience did to fight the Nazis.

    1. Yeah, good idea. Pray instead of doing something useful and effective.

You are quite the stunted sadistic ghoul, aren't you? As if those are realistic options for bedridden or paralyzed people who want to die in a dignified way surrounded by their loved ones at a moment of their choosing.

    Leave doctors out of it.

    We will not kill.

    1. I perform brain surgery almost daily.

I've spent 30 years learning how not to kill people.

I have no intention of taking up your new skill.

Keep your sickness away from my profession.

    2. Nobody is demanding you assist in euthanasia, so stop pretending that you're asked to do something against your conscience. And it's not a sickness to help people die in a dignified way according to their wish.

You know it's just a matter of time before euthanasia becomes the law of the land in the US, don't you? More civilized countries like the Netherlands are ahead, but you'll get there pretty soon, despite resistance from the godbots. Because most people feel it's the right thing to do.

      Here comes the three-headed Cerberus!

Decadence to the power of atheism!

    4. anon,
That may be so. I do not claim to be a great intellect, or even entirely good.
I admit to my faults and repent of my sins.
Simply put: I do seek to educate myself and make an effort to be good.
But you are simply wrong and side with evil at almost every chance. Even your mocking names drip with a sadistic pleasure.
Perhaps it is just immaturity, or a lack of life experience that draws you into such thinking. Perhaps it is the result of conditioning.
Perhaps it is some sort of act you put on while you're online. Perhaps it is a simply a weak and corrupt nature. Perhaps it is something darker still.
But, you should know there is a way out.
      You can still change.

  5. Now I am sick! After a quick review, KW remembers that in his dogma evil is just subjective...so after a scramble I become 'sick'. Conveniently, you may note, the source of my illness (for once not simply 'random' or 'emergent'!) is the morality he rebels against and the religion he lives to hate.
Maybe I am taking this wrong. Maybe it's just a coincidence that KW posted this right after my comment?
Maybe it's doctor Egnor that is sick! After all he believes in things like the Hippocratic Oath.
Or maybe the 90% of the 7 billion people on this earth who believe in an objective morality?
They're all nuts - it's KW that is sane and 'well'.
No matter. So long as he can justify killing the week and vulnerable while bashing religion.
    No daddy issues there, folks.
    Pure reason.

  6. It’s as if conservatives don’t understand the meaning of “suicide”.

There is no such thing as objective morality. If there where, why the hell would we be arguing about it all the time? I’m glad morality is subjective and open to discussion, because if it weren’t we’d still be stuck with Leviticus and the unconstitutional half of the Ten Commandments.

    1. KW: "... I’m glad morality is subjective..."

If I "was" you, I would not advertise that!

I hope you are always very very polite with people who also think like you. If they don't like you they may unleash the "subjective morality" on you and poke a few gaping holes where you previously had none.

      Un conseil d'ami.

Then what, by your lights, makes you right and me wrong?

    3. "If there where [such a thing as morality], why the hell would we be arguing about it all the time?"

For starters, because you people are liars, who simply will not admit the truth that morality is real and objective.

That is the most self-unaware statement of today.

who simply will not admit the truth that morality is real and objective.

Given that it is far from "truth" there is no reason to admit it.

No more obscene than you lecturing us on evolutionary biology, physics, artificial intelligence, and constitutional law, when you lack correct understanding of any of these fields.
