My wife and I just got our updates from Kaiser telling us what our 2014 rates will be. Her monthly has been $168 this year, mine $150. We have a high deductible. We are generally healthy people who don't go to the doctor often. I barely ever go. The insurance is in case of a major catastrophe.

Well, now, because of Obamacare, my wife's rate is gong to $302 per month and mine is jumping to $284.

I am canceling insurance for us and I am not paying any fucking penalty. What the hell kind of reform is this?

    --- T Caps, Daily Kos

What kind of reform is this? As Inspector Clouseau sagely replied when asked what kind of bomb went off: "The exploding kind. Mark my words, Francois. Sinister forces are at work..."

    1. Cool story, bro. But the plural of anecdote is not data.

But let's have some fun ayway:

In my private practice i have over 500 families that have been denied health insurance and Obamacare has been a life saver for them. Almost all of them are conservative republicans and once they found out that obamacare actually helps them they are stunned at what they hear from the republican party. Since October 10th in maryland, the health exchange has been working fine. It is indeed sad to see the republicans lying to the american people somehow believing they will be duped.

Wanna bet there are more losers than winners? Because, actuarially speaking, that's the only way jeebuscare can stay in business. If you disagree, show me the math.

    3. I hope you realize that you anecdote (which has been questioned, since it doesn't match with the experiences of many other people who live in the same state, and who use the same insurer) doesn't actually support egnor's graphic, since they are paying for their own health care, and not anyone else's.

Even if it were true, I'd rather subsidize healthcare than pay farm subsidies to ADM, and oil subsidies to Exxon, or a myriad of subsidies that are near and dear to the hearts of the Tea Partiers.

What I realize is that it supports Egnor's graphic perfectly. Mr Caps is bitching, whining because he's having to subsidize someone else. It's delightful! "What the hell kind of reform is this?" The exploding kind!

And truthfully, I could care less what you'd like to subsidize or not. I think you've confused me with someone who cares what your, or the Tea Party's, political pieties are. I don't want to subsidize any of them, from ADM and the ethanol pirates, to "Big Oil", to the banks, to the wind power leeches, to Tesla motors, to Jeebuscare signups.

    5. Insurance, medical or otherwise, involves many people subsidizing a few. Welcome to the real world.

Exactly who is he subsidizing? The amount he is bitching about is his own insurance premiums. Not someone else's

  2. Avik Roy has calculated that "Obamacare Will Increase Avg. Individual-Market Insurance Premiums By 99% For Men, 62% For Women."

    1. Avik Roy's methodology has been shown to be wrong numerous times. But don't worry about that I'm sure that this time they aren't doing something insanely stupid like the previous times.

    2. The Kozbot cited in the initial comment reported that: "My wife and I just got our updates from Kaiser telling us what our 2014 rates will be. Her monthly has been $168 this year, mine $150. [...] Well, now, because of Obamacare, my wife's rate is going to $302 per month and mine is jumping to $284."

Let's see...his premium increased 101%, and his wife's rate increased 69%. Hmmm...this is quite close the "99% For Men, 62% For Women" calculated by Avik Roy.

But the presumed devotee of DroneFührer Barry trashes Avik Roy as "wrong numerous times...insanely stupid" without as much as a single citation. Projection possibly??

Even CNN is beginning to wise up, reporting that "Doctor shortage, increased demand could crash health care system".

  3. Considering that the Democratic Party originated as a scheme to systematically loot the public treasury of New York City, it's fitting, don't you think, that they have *always* stayed true to their roots and ideals -- living off the sewat of someone else's brow?

    1. Illion,

It's noteworthy that Angelo Codevilla made the same point in his essay America's Ruling Class-- Democrats have always been true to their ideals-- they are the party of elites and the people who the elites feed. Democrats stand for something, evil as hell, but unashamed.

Republicans dither. Sometimes they do the right thing, sometimes they act like Democrats.

That's why Democrats have much more party loyalty than Repubs do.

  4. the 'Hoo' whom Horton never hears, for Horton cannot hear liars: "Insurnce, medical or otherwise, involves many people subsidizing a few. Welcome to the real world."

    1) insurance does *not* (in any way) "involve[] many people subsidizing a few";
    2) insurance is many individuals voluntarily pooling their individual exposure to some risk, by establishing a pooled resource to save from ruination whichever specific individual(s) actually end up experiencing the feared risk.
