Avortements libres!

From Reason:

France on Monday unveiled a package of reforms designed to increase access to abortion, including 100 percent reimbursement of medical costs by the state social security system.
At present French women are only able to claim back between 70 and 80 percent of the costs, which average between 200 and 450 euros depending on whether the abortion is induced by medication taken at home or carried out by surgical procedure in a clinic.

A State agrees to not merely permit-- but to underwrite-- the killing of its own children.

In the not-to-distant future, France will be Muslim, and it will turn from secular barbarism to an older Muslim tradition-- killing other people's children.

    My feelings on this are mixed. First, I don't consider an abortionist to be an actual doctor. They may wear white lab coats and they may have "MD" next to their names, but real doctors are healers not killers. Even Hippocrates knew that, which is why he included a prohibition upon abortive remedies in his oath some 2500 years ago.

    On the other hand, what ever happened to safe, legal, and rare? Safe and rare just flew out the window. There just aren't enough people to perform this procedure--which we'd prefer to keep rare--so we decided to permit non-professionals to do it, thus making it less safe. Make sense?

    The conclusion I draw is that safe and rare were always smokescreens. What they really want is for abortion to be legal and commonplace, with safety being of little consequence next to the other two.

      I share your mixed feelings about allowing non-MD to do abortions.

      An abortion is not really a medical treatment, in that if no one dies from it it was done improperly. I'd love to see the medical profession totally detached from it.

      On the other hand, if non-MD's do it, that would increase the availability, which is bad as well.

      Ugly choices.

  2. Leftists won't be satisfied until every 7-11 in America offers abortions on demand. "Safe," legal, and "rare" my butt.

  3. Dr. Egnor,

    I studied French in high school, and I'm certainly no expert, but I think "libre" means free as in liberated, not free as in costing nothing. That would be gratuit.

    1. Joey;

      I just used Google Translate. I figured it might be bad French. Oh well...

    2. Dr. Egnor, your title is very good.
      "Avortements libres" is a better punch line than "Avortements gratuits": it means that abortions are like the air we breathe, a normal run-of-the-mill thing. This title says it all!
