Well, the data must have changed...

From Steven Goddard at Real Science:

When Did NOAA Get Taken Over By A Crime Syndicate?

Posted on
February 04, 1989
Last week, scientists from the United States Commerce Department’sNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that a study of temperature readings for the contiguous 48 states over the last century showed there had been no significant change in average temperature over that period.
Dr. (Phil) Jones said in a telephone interview today that his own results for the 48 states agreed with those findings.
In 1989, NOAA and CRU said that there had been no warming in the US. Now they show more than one degree warming for the same period...

See the graphs at the link.

It seems that the temperature data for the last century has changed. In 1989 it showed no warming for the past century. Now, it shows a lot of warming for the past century.

The same time period. Same data.

Goddard sums up the obvious:

At some point after 1999, NOAA appears to have been taken over [by] crooks in pursuit of funding.

  1. This is either stupid (on Egnor's part) or malicious (Goddard's).

The NYT article is talking about two different temperature records: the mean temperature in the contiguous 48 States (NOAA) and the mean global temperature (UEA).

From 1900 to 1988, the NOAA record shows a warming trend of 0.33 degrees Fahrenheit plus or minus 0.28 degrees. In other words, the signal is at the level of noise, i.e. not statistically significant. The global data had a warming trend of 0.5 degrees and a lower level of noise, so it was statistically significant.

In fact, one can read further in the NYT article this:
Dr. Jones said in a telephone interview today that his own results for the 48 states agreed with those findings. But he said there was no inconsistency between the apparent stable trend in the United States and the rise in global temperature because the 48 states cover a very small fraction of the earth's surface and there are bound to be regional variations in climate.

Caveat. I am not 100 percent that Goddard acted with malice. Hanlon's razor points to stupidity in his case as the likely explanation as well.

  2. And in fact, the US48 data has changed since 1988. 23 years have been added! Adding data is obviously fraudulent practice. Some conservative prosecutor should get on the case pronto! It will be fun to watch.
